Quality Vision International Groundbreaking Ceremony

Quality Vision International (QVI®, www.qvii.com), the Rochester-based manufacturer of precision optical measurement systems, broke ground today on a new 16,000 square foot manufacturing building on its Hudson Avenue campus. Construction of the new building marks the last phase of a five-year, 37,000 square foot expansion of the company’s global engineering and manufacturing headquarters.

Quality Vision International (QVI®, www.qvii.com), the Rochester-based manufacturer of precision optical measurement systems, broke ground today on a new 16,000 square foot manufacturing building on its Hudson Avenue campus. Construction of the new building marks the last phase of a five-year, 37,000 square foot expansion of the company’s global engineering and manufacturing headquarters.

QVI Chief Operating Officer Keith Polidor remarked that “construction of this new building will complete our five-year plan to add the necessary manufacturing space for our expanded product lines, enabling us to serve the growing market for our metrology system products around the world.”

The new Building #4 is the final phase of construction to add additional manufacturing capacity. Beginning in 2014, the company added 12,500 square feet to its Assembly building, followed by a 4,200 square foot addition to its South machine shop, and a 4,000 square foot addition to its Customer Center showroom. Properties were acquired along Herald Street to provide the necessary land for buildings and parking. The Hudson Avenue campus occupies more than 275,000 square feet of manufacturing space and employs over 300 full time staff.

QVI has been located at the 850 Hudson Avenue site since 1973. Prior to that, the company operated at 26 Forbes Street in Rochester, and at various locations in downtown Rochester since its founding in 1945.

“This additional capacity is a vital step forward as we continue serving our growing base of global manufacturing customers,” said R. Stephen Flynn, Sr. Vice President of QVI. “As precision and quality grow ever more important to consumers, our products become more important to manufacturers. This new space will allow us to build the larger and more sophisticated measurement systems that our customers need to improve their production processes,” Flynn said.

“So much of our growth is the result of our long-time partnerships with our Representative Partners,” said Flynn. “Twenty years ago, our Western New York Representative Dick Loewenguth helped break ground for our North Street Assembly Building. Today, his son Tom Loewenguth put the first shovel in the ground for this new building,” noted Flynn. “These long-standing relationships between manufacturers and their sales representatives are increasingly rare, and we take great pride in these partnerships that have helped us to become the world leader in vision metrology systems.”

SmartScope SP represents the leading edge of high-performance dimensional measurement, combining high-end scanning touch probe capability with traditional video measuring strengths, all delivered in a cost-effective package. SmartScope SP offers scanning probe, a large working distance optical/video sensor, an expansive optical/digital zoom range and a five-megapixel metrology camera, all as standard equipment.

SmartScope SP optics are designed for maximum imaging performance and flexibility over a wide range of applications. Its standard front objective lens offers the convenience of a large field of view, while the 5.5x zoom lens provides a range of higher magnifications to accurately image small features. An optional high magnification objective lens is easily interchanged when feature sizes require it. A 5.0-megapixel metrology camera and dedicated monochromatic illuminators contribute to sharp imaging at all zoom positions.

The SP telecentric lens system enables use of the QVI exclusive TeleStar® Plus through-the-lens interferometric laser. This TTL laser offers an extra-long working distance and sub-micron resolution, perfect for high precision surface profiling and depth measurements.

SmartScope SP is available in benchtop and floor model platforms. The benchtop SmartScope SP 332 offers a patented elevating-bridge design and provides machined-in squareness and a large work envelope, with a small footprint. SmartScope SP 463 is a rugged fixed-bridge floor model system that can handle larger, heavier parts, or groups of fixture-mounted parts, in a workshop environment. And SmartScope SP 663 offers an even larger measuring volume and high payload capacity.

New SmartScope SP may be seen in person at upcoming regional tech tours as well as industry trade shows throughout the summer, leading up to IMTS 2018 in Chicago in September.

QVI TurnCheck systems address the major sources of measurement uncertainty found in shaft measurement today, by focusing on advanced optics, thermal stability, and ease of use.

TurnCheck optics have been designed and manufactured by QVI – the world’s largest vision metrology company, with over 70 years’ experience in optical design. The illumination system found in TurnCheck systems produces highly collimated light with a constant wavelength, eliminating the wrap-around effect on turned parts. The receiving optics are fully telecentric with each element designed to eliminate distortion. The result is a crisp, uniformly magnified image across the entire field of view, with no edge effects or exclusion zones.

TurnCheck systems are designed to deliver accurate measurements in shop floor conditions where vibration and temperature variation are common. Careful consideration was taken in selecting materials to allow the design of TurnCheck systems to mitigate the effects of thermal variation found in shop floor environments.

TurnCheck system software is intuitive and intelligent. There is no need to adjust lighting, focus, or image tools – the system optimizes these features automatically. Simple controls, easy loading and unloading, and intelligent tools let the operator focus on what they want to measure, rather than how they should be measuring it, allowing for fast setup time without the need for extensive operator training.

Designed and manufactured in the United States, TurnCheck systems are offered in three different model ranges to accommodate a range of parts, up to 1200 mm in length.
